The Cancer Society is the organisation dedicated to reducing the incidence and impact of cancer and ensuring the best cancer care for everyone in New Zealand.
The Cancer Society Wellington is one of six regional divisions making up the Cancer Society of New Zealand. Stretching up the Kapiti coast from Wellington, it also encompasses Nelson, Marlborough and Wairarapa. Since 1929 we have worked with people with cancer, their families and the community to reduce the incidence and impact of cancer with core services in:
- Support and information for people and their family, whanau and supporters who are affected by cancer, health professionals and the general public
- Health promotion to influence healthy public policy and support people to stay well
- Funding medical and scientific research for detecting and treating cancer more effectively
- Providing 24 free car parking spaces daily and overnight accommodation for up to 40 people requiring cancer treatment at Wellington hospital
How will a bequest make a difference?
A Will requires just a few pen strokes, and yet it can have such a massive effect on so many people’s lives. Your deferred gift, by way of a bequest, is a permanent legacy. It’s your way of ‘paying it forward’ to future generations. No matter what size your bequest is, you’ll be helping countless New Zealanders cope with, and overcome cancer.
How we help
Despite receiving no direct government funding, and relying solely on donations and bequests to continue our work, we remain the only charity to address all cancers. We’re proud that our services remain free, confidential and accessible to all.
Receive $250 towards your legal costs
Once you have made a bequest to us through your Will, or by way of a memorandum of wishes, you can arrange for your lawyer or the Public Trust to send us an account for up to $250 + GST towards the cost of your legal fees.
Fulfilling your exact wishes
If you’d like to leave a specific amount, or to nominate that your bequest be used for a specific purpose, we’d be happy to discuss your options in person.
Letting us know you’ve helped
We would like to acknowledge and thank you for leaving a bequest and encourage you to let us know when you have done so. This is of course up to you. It also helps us to plan ahead for future projects – an incredibly important part of our work. Telling us your wishes is of course 100% confidential.
When you contact us we will also offer to make you a lifetime member of the Hope Fellowship. It’s our small way to acknowledge your commitment and generosity. You will then receive:
- A lapel pin to commemorate the promise of a bequest
- Your name on the Hope Fellowship honour board
- An invitation to attend an exclusive luncheon hosted by the Chief Executive Officer
- Invitations to other special events
- With your consent, a special mention in appropriate Cancer Society publications.
Whether you choose to join the Hope Fellowship is completely up to you. We understand that sometimes supporters wish to remain anonymous, and of course we always respect the wishes of those who prefer to keep their bequests confidential.
Thank you from the CEO
Bequests are a great way to make a life-giving contribution. A bequest in a Will takes no money from you during your lifetime, yet provides for the benefit of many generations to come. Your bequest, no matter how large or small, can and does have an impact on every-one who is touched by cancer.
Please join me in leaving a bequest to the Cancer Society. Together, we will help the Cancer Society to continue to provide vital services to our local community.
Sincerely, I want to thank you for your consideration. It means so much.
