Sustaining Sir Murray Halberg's Vision
Sir Murray’s Legacy
Realising the life enhancing benefits of sport and recreation, Sir Murray Halberg started a charity in 1963 to ensure that disabled children could have access to the equipment and support that would enable them to be included in the activities of their choice. Over fifty years later the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation has been acknowledged by Sport New Zealand for its pivotal role in advocating for physically disabled young people in the community sport and recreation sector.
The Foundation annually allocates between $150,000 and $200,000 in Activity Fund grants that provide physically disabled young people throughout New Zealand with the opportunity to be included in sport and recreation activities. These grants have enabled young people to purchase adapted sport and recreation equipment, given them the opportunity to attend school camps or receive adapted coaching for their specific requirements.
The Foundation maintains a network of Disability Sport Advisers, who engage with individuals, families and organisations, promoting sport and recreational inclusion in clubs, schools and public facilities. Income from the Endowment Fund will provide a perpetual source of funds, assisting the Foundation to maintain and grow its services to physically disabled young people throughout New Zealand.
The Endowment Fund welcomes bequests
The Fund’s management will accept gifts of cash, property, bonds, shares, equities and other forms of investment that will either be managed or converted into investments that can be administered for the benefit of the Foundation.
