Set in 80 hectares, Orana Wildlife Park (Christchurch) is New Zealand’s only open range zoo. Operated by Orana Wildlife Trust, a registered charity, our aims are to provide quality recreation facilities for the community, while creating positive attitudes through education and the undertaking of conservation and research work in support of endangered species.
As a registered charity, Orana does not receive government funding. It is a constant struggle to fund our important conservation work and we raise 100% of funds for capital projects.
Orana is internationally recognised for its breeding achievements with giraffe, cheetah, rhinoceros and scimitar-horned oryx.
New Zealand native conservation success includes breeding of kiwi, blue duck (whio) and brown teal (pateke). Birds are released to the wild.
The Park is an important recreational facility and city asset. All sectors of the community are encouraged to visit. Orana will be an important contributor to the economic recovery of Christchurch (post-quakes) by providing an excellent reason for visitors to visit Christchurch. Orana has recently completed the most ambitious project in its history – a Great Ape Centre that is home to New Zealand’s only gorillas. Sumatran orang-utans will be added in the near future.
With your help, the Park will continue to make a meaningful contribution to species conservation whilst providing a fun setting for people of all ages.
