For more than 80 years, SAFE has been one of the strongest voices in New Zealand defending animals from cruelty and abuse. We are one of the world’s most respected animal advocacy organisations because we make a real difference to the lives of both animals and people.
SAFE undertakes education, research and campaigning for the benefit of all animals. Recent achievements include:
- Providing free, world-class educational resources to every New Zealand secondary school, encouraging students to think critically about our relationship with animals and cultivate ethical values.
- Ending the use of exotic animals in circuses.
- Securing a ban (from 2016) on the cruel sow stalls used to confine pregnant pigs.
- Raising awareness of the appalling conditions experienced by pigs and other animals on factory farms.
- Securing a nationwide ban on the testing of recreational drugs on animals.
Why we – and they – need your help
Throughout New Zealand there are animals suffering:
- Battery hens are forced to spend their entire lives in cramped cages constantly feeling stress and physical discomfort.
- Pregnant pigs are kept for weeks in crates so tiny they can’t even turn around.
- About 300,000 animals each year are used in experimentation, testing and teaching in New Zealand - from cats and dogs to rabbits, deer, mice, rats, fish, birds, pigs, cows and guinea pigs.
