SPCA New Zealand - Protecting New Zealand’s animals for generations to come

Each year, thousands of New Zealand animals are being deliberately harmed, neglected and abandoned.

For over 130 years, the SPCA has been there to rescue animals from these harmful situations, attend animal emergencies and investigate complaints about animal cruelty. We have made it our mission to build a loving New Zealand community where all animals are treated with compassion and respect. 

By leaving a gift in your will to the SPCA, you can help us make this vision a reality, and ensure that the love you have for animals can continue for generations to come.

Your gift will help bring animal offenders to justice and ensure that in the future, thousands of animals passing through our 45 animal centres get the love and care they need and deserve. Your generosity will help us shape how the next generation of New Zealanders treat animals, by funding research into animal welfare issues and supporting our nationwide education programme for children and at-risk youth.

SPCA is the only charity in New Zealand that can legally enforce the Animal Welfare Act, and without us, there would be no one to rescue and seek justice for animals in need. Yet we are the only enforcement agency that is reliant on donations as we receive almost no government funding. But people often forget that the SPCA is a charity and without the generous support of people like you, we simply couldn’t continue the vital work we do.

Before you decide to leave a gift to a charity, it’s important you know they’re strong and reliable, and will be here long into the future to ensure your wishes are honoured.  SPCA has been working with the communities of New Zealand for over 130 years, and with your support will be here for the next 130 years and beyond.

Caring for your pets

If you choose to make a bequest to the SPCA in your Will, it really helps if you let us know. As well as giving us the opportunity to thank you for your generosity, we will be able to give you peace of mind that your pets are cared for when you are gone.

You can opt to transfer custody to a friend or family member, however if no one is able to care for them, you can include a clause in your will which gives custody to your local SPCA centre.

To ensure the wording in your will accurately describes your intentions, the following clauses should be included:

I give (a specified share of the residue/or the sum of/or a specified bequest) to The Royal New Zealand Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Incorporated (RNZSPCA) for its general purposes and I declare that the receipt of the appointed officer of the Society shall be full and sufficient discharge for the said legacy.

I further declare that at the date of my death or the date of distribution of my estate, any charity named in my will does not exist or has amalgamated with another charity or has changed its name, such legacy or residuary gift shall not fail but my trustees shall pay it to the charitable organisation which they consider most nearly fulfills the objects I intended to benefit.
